An Environmental Management Systems (EMS) is a set of processes and practices that enable an organization to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency. Most EMSs are developed to conform to the ISO 14001 standard.
Developing EMS that provide a demonstrable organizational and environmental benefits requires a deep understanding of EMS components and the ability to integrate them with existing organizational procedures and practices.
The Compliance-Focused Environmental Management System (CFEMS) concept was created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in 1997, the same year AARCHER was founded, and last revised June 2005. The USEPA Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assistance (OECA) continues to advocate the use of CFEMS as part of enforcement agreements. State enforcement agencies also often include requirements for CFEMS implementation in state-driven enforcement agreements. The CFEMS includes 12 required elements, which are meant as supplements to ISO 14001 EMS components, but can be implemented independently.
AARCHER is an EMS and CFEM implementation consulting firm. Our EMS specialists support client organizations in developing conforming EMSs or working to improve existing systems to meet changing ISO standards or maximize organizational benefits.
